What is Fermi 2?
Fermi 2 is a faulty and dangerous Nuclear Reactor that sits on the shore of Lake Erie and puts our health and our Great Lakes (20% of the world’s freshwater) at serious risk. It is the same fatally flawed Mark 1 design as the Fukushima reactor that melted down in Japan in 2011.
The Fermi 2 Nuclear Reactor:
Discharges 45 million gallons of treated wastewater into Lake Erie daily
Dramatically increases cancer rates in the surrounding population (see radiation.org)
Charges taxpayers to store waste that will take thousands of years to become safe
Relies on the extremely toxic nuclear fuel stream
Why Shut It Down?
Daily operations at Fermi 2 are a toxic nightmare, even when operating as intended. Maintenance requires applications of dozens of highly toxic, persistent, bioaccumulative pollutants. The entire nuclear fuel stream is dangerous and dirty. It includes abandoned, unmitigated mines and unresolvable waste storage issues. An economic loser, nuclear power relies heavily on subsidization, high consumer rates, inadequate regulation, and corrupt political cover. Nuclear power is far too dangerous for commercial liability insurance, so the nuclear industry counts on the backing of taxpayers, thanks to the Price Anderson Nuclear Industries Indemnity Act.
Shutting down Fermi 2 will help us protect our Great Lakes and surrounding communities from nuclear disaster, and truly prioritize the safe, green, renewable energy solutions that we need.
What You Can Do
Protecting the Great Lakes from nuclear hazards and creating a robust green renewable energy infrastructure will only happen if we demand it. To this end, CRAFT employs a multitude of ways to inform the public and bring about change. Here are a few ways to support or get involved in these efforts:
Stay in Touch - Sign up for our email list, and follow us on Facebook and Instagram for all of the latest updates.
Educate - Check out our Blog and Resources for information about the dangers of nuclear energy, and updates on the fight to shut down Fermi 2.
Take Action - We keep our Actions page up to date with steps you can take to help shut down Fermi2, address the harm caused, and build a more just energy future.
CRAFT is an Indigenous-led grassroots organization with decades of experience confronting the nuclear industry. Supporting our work helps to ensure the safe, healthy, future of the Great Lakes Region and life on earth. You can donate here:
